Product Description

It lets a safe-area load be controlled by a switch or NAMUR proximity detector installed in a hazardous area, while isolating the hazardous side from the safe area. User-selectable line fault detection (LFD) reports open- or short-circuit field wiring via the module LED and de-energises the output relay on a fault. Phase reversal is set by a side switch, and the output is a single-pole changeover relay. The unit is commonly used on process plants to bring proximity and dry-contact inputs safely into a control system. The MTL5511 is a single-channel switch/proximity detector interface from the MTL5500 series of intrinsic-safety isolating interface units.

Basic Product Information

  • NAMUR / BS EN 60947-5-6 input with 7-9 Vdc sensor supply from 1 kohm
  • User-selectable line fault detection (LFD) with LED indication for open- and short-circuit field wiring
  • Single-pole changeover relay output for flexible NO/NC wiring
  • Galvanic isolation 250 V rms between safe-area circuits and power supply; SIL2/SIL3 capable
  • Single-channel interface lets a safe-area load be controlled from a hazardous-area switch or proximity detector

Technical Specifications

Version & Model Difference

The MTL5511 is the MTL5500-series single-channel switch/proximity detector interface with changeover relay output. The MTL4511 is the corresponding MTL4500-series equivalent with reduced contact ratings on the safe-area side. Both share the same NAMUR input, LFD and isolation concept, but the safe-area relay contact rating differs, so verify which series matches your existing backplane before ordering.

Application Scenarios

  • Hazardous-area proximity and dry-contact input to a DCS or PLC
  • Process plant valve and position switch monitoring
  • Tank farm and pipeline limit-switch interfacing
  • Intrinsically safe alarm and status circuits
  • MTL MTL4544 Signal Isolator
  • MTL MTL4549Y Isolating Driver

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the MTL5511 do?

It is a single-channel isolating interface that lets a safe-area load be controlled by a switch or NAMUR proximity detector located in a hazardous area, with line fault detection.

What output does it provide?

A single-pole changeover relay output, rated 250 V ac / 2 A or 40 Vdc / 2 A for resistive loads.

Does it detect field wiring faults?

Yes. Line fault detection is user-selectable via side switches and reports open or short circuits through the red LFD LED, de-energising the output relay on a fault.

What supply voltage does it need?

A 20 ... 35 Vdc supply, drawing about 25 mA at 24 V and dissipating about 0.6 W.
